Appendix 1: Homework Assignment Sheet

Japanese 3 Summer Training

"You are now among the elite!"

Essentially, this selection of activities exists for the sole purpose of keeping the in-coming Japanese 3 students focused on Japanese and on good work habits for the summer.  Mr. Hurley and I spoke about the difficulities faced by the previous year's Japanese 3 students who came in rusty or lacking adequate fundamental skills.  In particular, I want to accomplish two things:  I want the Japansese students to review Japanese 2 matieral so they can hit the ground running in Japanese 3.   I also want to see how well I can run a quasi-independent summer study program via the Internet.  This could be the perfect opportunity to try out some new activities and new types of assessment.

Each assignment would be e-mailed to the student on the Monday of the week and be due by Friday of the same week.  By that reckoning, there will be nine (9) nine assignments.  Each assignment will incoporate plain form review, an Internet-based reading/research portion, and some writing component.  The summer assignment (SA) dates are as follows:

SA 1       June  25 (due 6/29)
SA 2       July  2 (due 7/6)
SA 3       July  9 (due 7/13)
SA 4       July 16 (due 7/20)
SA 5       July  23 (due 7/27)
SA 6       July  30 (due 8/3)
SA 7       August  6 (due 8/10)
SA 8       August  13 (8/17)
SA 9       August  20 (8/24)

Before the first assignment is due, I will send out an e-mail message to each student to confirm that you are ready to begin the project.  Upon receipt of your response, I will send them the first assignment.  I will send the due dates for all assignments, but I will not send you all the assignments for fear you would do all the work in a week, turn it in, and then not think about Japanese for the rest of the summer.  That result goes against what you need to do--use and study Japanese for the entire summer.   Points will be assigned on an assignment by assignment basis.  All assignments will be worth five (5) points.  Leaving any part of any assignment blank constitutes a zero for that assignment.  Failure to turn in ALL assignments ON TIME will require you to meet me at Silver Creek to take another Japanese 2 final, which you must pass in order to be considered for Japanese 3.  Bottom line:  just turn in the assignments and you'll be fine.  Of course, if you have any trouble at all viewing the sites that I have listed for the assignments, then you have several options:  You can try to view it using a computer at a friend's house or at the library.  You can schedule a time with me when you may use the computers in D-7.  Or, you can attempt to download the software or plug-ins that would enable you complete the work at home on your own computer. You can always contact me at (650) 964-2675 or at juggle_sensei@hotmail.com
