Every year students from the Silver Creek Thunderously Hip Japanese Program (SCTHJP) take a trip to Japan to visit the wonderful students and families of Korakukan High School in Okayama, Japan. This relationship, begun several years ago by Mr. Rushton Hurley, has grown into a strong connection--arguably one of the jewels out of the many activities in which SCTHJP students may partake. This year, for the first time in the history of the program, we took the trip after school ended in June. Our first stop, as always, was in Kyoto. We stayed there two days and visited such sites as Kiyomizudera and Sanjuusangendou. As we have done for the last four years, we also took a day trip to see the Atomic Peace Park in Hiroshima. Next, we moved on to our home stays in Okayama. This year we were taken to the exotic and artful island of Naoshima--our first boat ride and our first exposure to the wonderful Japanese art of bunraku. Lastly, it needs to be mentioned that the students on the trip did an excellent job at using the language, and were on-time fully 100% of the time for the ENTIRE trip. All in all, this trip represents a not-to-be missed opportunity for the serious student who wants to learn and have fun in a foreign country.
