2007 Japanese Language Proficiency Test

Last December, SCTHJP students traveled to San Francisco to take the internationally recognized Japanese Language Proficiency Test. This test, given on one day around the world by the Japan Foundation and the Japanese Government, consists of a Reading Section, a Listening Section, and a Chinese character (kanji) section. Students who pass the exam are given a certificate ranking them based on their skill with the language. This year we had a healthy 68 students take the exam, but we experienced a sharp decline from last year's record 83% overall pass rate, coming in this year at 62%. The main drop happened on the Level 3 exam, where 27% fewer of the students taking it passed. On a good note, the number of students passing the first, easiest Level 4 exam remained a robust 79%, down only 4% from 2006. We will re-double our efforts for next year!
