Every year students from the Silver Creek Thunderously Hip Japanese Program (SCTHJP) take a trip to Japan to visit the wonderful students and families of Korakukan High School in Okayama, Japan. This relationship, begun several years ago by Mr. Rushton Hurley, has grown into a strong connection--remains one of the jewels out of the many activities in which SCTHJP students may partake. In 2009, our trip was canceled due to the failing U.S. economy, but this year we came back better than ever.
This year we also had the pleasure of Josh and Eileen Bloom's company on the trip. International travelers and teachers themselves, the Blooms added new perspective and advice to our outing. Our first stop, as always, was in Kyoto. We stayed there two days and visited such sites as Kiyomizudera, the spectacular Nijo Castle, and Fushimi Inari Taisha. We also took our usual day trip to see the Atomic Peace Park in Hiroshima--always thought-provoking and spiritually moving. Next, we moved on to our home stays in Okayama.
Lastly, we returned to Tokyo for our third year, and for the second time, embarked upon an improved SCTHJP tradition--the Tokyo Scavenger Hunt! The winning team collected a 5000 yen per teammate in a battle that led them from one end of Tokyo to the other! All in all, this trip represents a not-to-be missed opportunity for the serious student who wants to learn and have fun in a foreign country.
